to your wish list?
Storyline:
In 1941, three men reach India from Tibet, having walked 4000 miles after escaping a Siberian gulag. The film tells their story and that of four others who escaped with them and a teenage girl who joins them in flight. The group's natural leader is Janusz, a Pole condemned by accusations secured by torturing his wife; he knows how to live in the wilds. They escape under cover of a snowstorm: a cynical American, a Russian thug, a comic accountant, a pastry chef who draws, a priest, and a Pole with night blindness. They face freezing nights, lack of food and water, mosquitoes, an endless desert, the Himalayas, and moral questions of when to leave someone behind.

Close to the book , unbelievable story. Desert scenes get a little long but helps you feel the isolation.

AN ENGROSSING AND BALANCED STORY OF THE WALK OUT OF THE RUSSIAN PRISON TO INDIA. THE ACTING WAS EXCELLENT. THE PACE OF THE JOURNEY KEPT MY ATTENTION. THE BACKGROUND SHOTS FIT THE SITUATIONS VERY WELL; SOME WERE BEAUTIFUL WOULD BE ENJOYED BY ADULTS WHO HAVE TAKEN LONG JOURNEYS. I WOULD RATE IT A 4 OUT OF 5.

More of a history and geography piece than anything else, but it is beautifully filmed. Ed Harris & Colin Farrel are fine enough in this prison work camp (Gulag) escape movie. The films wraps up well and the ending is rather teary. Peter Weir gives awful direction. The screen play is choppy like they cut out scenes. There is no early character development so you have no compassion for anyone until the second half when you finally understand the characters. Rent it and get a good reminder of what a monster Stalin was. You will definately appreciate America more!

History of this movie is very good. Many of us do not know nor realize how
Stalin made friends and neighbors defect on each other in order to survive.
